Two veterans of Broadway’s Chicago are returning to the Tony-winning revival. Bianca Marroquin will play Roxie Hart from April 15 through April 25, replacing current star Michelle Williams. Then original London star Ruthie Henshall, who is currently back in the West End production, will play the merry murderess from April 26 through June 13, 2010.
Marroquin first played the role of Roxie Hart in a 2002 production in Mexico City, which won her five awards from the Mexican Critics Association. Later that year, she debuted on Broadway as Roxie, a transition that made Marroquin the first and only Latina actress to cross over from Mexico to Broadway in a leading role. Marroquin also starred in Chicago's third national tour, for which she earned the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in 2004.
Henshall originated the role of Roxie Hart in the 1997 London revival of Chicago in a performance that garnered a Laurence Olivier Award nomination. Her other West End credits include Marguerite, Oliver!, Les Miserables, Crazy for You, Miss Saigon and Cats. Henshall played the role of Velma Kelly in Broadway's Chicago in 1999. She has also been seen on the Great White Way in Follies, Chicago, Miss Saigon and Putting it Together. This engagement will mark Henshall's first time playing Roxie Hart on Broadway.
In addition to Williams, who will end her stint as Roxie Hart on April 13 (and head to the Los Angeles engagement of the show's national tour), Chicago currently stars Amra-Faye Wright as Velma Kelly (through April 29), Tom Hewitt as Billy Flynn (through April 18), Tom Riis Farrell as Amos Hart and Carol Woods as Matron “Mama” Morton. Gossip Girl hunk Matthew Settle is set to join the cast as Billy Flynn on April 19 and recent Finian’s Rainbow player Terri White will take on the role of Matron “Mama” Morton on April 26.
